Kitchen · Dining · Utility

As you head through the house from the entrance, you walk into large, open-plan kitchen and dining area. The classic kitchen has solid wood worktops and is well equipped with modern appliances, including a large freestanding oven and separate grill, hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, Nespresso coffee machine, milk frothers, blender, Kitchen-aid, kettle, and toaster. The kitchen has been thoughtfully equipped to a very high standard for large groups who want to self-cater and enjoy meals together.

The dining area is beautifully furnished with a solid wood tabletop as the centrepiece of the room. We have always felt that it is important to have a grand dining table to enjoy long and relaxed meals with your friends and family. The dining table seats twelve and you can squeeze a few highchairs around it if you needed to. The dining room is also equipped with a wine and drinks fridge and drinks serving area so not to disrupt the chefs at work in the main kitchen area.

The utility room holds the washing machine, tumble dryer, an additional dishwasher, sink, and two fridge freezers. We felt it was important to be able to do a big shop in Wells or Fakenham and have enough space to keep it all fresh for your time at The Old Chequers. There is also a larger unit for all the overflow food and a cleaning cupboard. This is a great space that keeps the entertaining area fuss-free and organised.

THE COMFORTS OF HOME

Living and Entertainment Areas

The living area has been cleverly divided up to cater for all staying in the house. You could either sit next to the cosy log burner in the library while soaking up the natural light that flows from the sunroom, or enjoy a movie from the cinema room's wrap-around sofa. The log burner sets the ambience to the library, across from the cinema room, and we always enjoy watching the flames through the glass. There is a fireguard to keep little fingers at bay. Logs and all things fire can be found at the local nursery or at the petrol station in Burnham Market, though we do always try and keep a good level of stock in the house itself.

The children can play in the playroom that has a few toys and board games to keep them occupied. Relax in the sunroom conservatory and hopefully be lucky enough to meet our feathered friends and their ducklings on the river. The living spaces really do provide areas for all to enjoy and is perfect for families with children or friends on a relaxing retreat.

We've also recently added a full room dedicated to games and entertainment, with a brand new pool table and arcade games, as well as an additional TV. Our home provides a tranquil and relaxing spot where you can disconnect from the world, but do not fret, we are connected to high speed fibre internet and the smart TVs have BT TV (including BT and Sky Sports), Netflix, Amazon video, etc. at the click of a button. The house has networked speakers throughout and music can be played simultaneously or separately in each room. If you need to work while away from home, we've got you sorted with a dedicated workspace.

The pebbled courtyard on the north side of the house has been thoughtfully furnished to an additional social space. From the dining room you can use the arched window to pass food and drinks through to the Courtyard and Firepit area. It is a cosy corner to tuck away into at night time with the fairy lit skyline to enjoy alfresco dining and a seated fire pit area to keep warm on the chillier evenings.

LUXURY OUTDOOR LIVING

Walled Garden

The quintessentially British, flint stone walled garden has been planted with a variety of plants, shrubs, and bushes. There is a large lawn to enjoy a run-around with the children, play a few lawn games, or just watch the river flow by. There is a large decking area with a dining table and outside sofas to enjoy the garden and some alfresco dining on the "sunny" side of the house. A recent addition to the house is a wood fired hot tub with capacity for up to 8 people at a time! The Hot Tub has a lid so can be made child-safe at all times.

There are lights all around the garden and creake, so that you can appreciate the garden at night. It truly is wonderful sitting in a night garden. The garden has a Webber BBQ to flip a few burgers and sear a nice steak or some fist-sized scallops if you are lucky enough to pick some up from the local fishmongers at Burnham Market.

We have young children and appreciate that the open river can be a little concerning. However, we feel very comfortable with our children playing outside in the water, albeit we do make sure they are supervised. Dogs can also enjoy paddling in the water but please also be mindful of the small tunnels either end of the stream in the garden as this is not fenced off.

HISTORY OF THE OLD CHEQUERS

The Chequers Inn

Previously known as the Chequers Inn, the property was one of the central buildings in the quiet village of South Creake during its days as an operational  pub. While the exact date of construction is unknown, the Inn was built well over 300 years ago, and was a popular gathering place for locals as the local pub to the neighbouring brewery, which is no longer in operation. This historic pub building has been beautifully renovated and furnished to a very high standard. Following its full renovation, The Old Chequers now offers all the modern conveniences while keeping its old world charm.
